MLK Model of Justice AwardeeAugust, 2016 - Berges Family Foundation Gives $250,000 Gift to Support STEM Education

We are happy to announce that the Berges Family Foundation awarded Marian Middle School $250,000 in order to start building a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) laboratory, makerspace, and workshop.

Jim, Cathy, and Kevin Berges recognize the importance of providing girls with STEM education. "There is a looming shortage of scientists, engineers, and technicians as baby boomers retire," said Berges. "Women are underrepresented in these fields and programs such as Marian's will encourage girls to pursue high paying STEM careers that will help fill the gap."

The Berges Family Innovation Center will advance Marian Middle School's mission to break the cycle of poverty by preparing girls to become workforce ready critical thinkers and creative problem solvers with the skills to be highly employable in STEM-related careers.

Principal AnnouncementMarch, 2015 - We would like to share some bittersweet news with our school community. Principal Christy Toben will be expecting her second child this summer and will not return to Marian for the 2015-2016 school year. Christy has been a valuable member of the Marian family since 2003 when she came to the school as our English teacher through the Gateway Vincentian Volunteer Program. She continued teaching English for a few more years before becoming principal in 2007. While we are sad to see her leave, please join me in thanking Christy for her noteworthy contributions over the past decade.

Since the beginning of 2015, a committee has been searching for a qualified candidate to take Christy's position. We are happy to announce the appointment of Sister Sarah Heger, CSJ, as principal for the 2015-2016 school year. Sister Sarah has been with Marian as a 5th grade teacher since 2010, and this year also took on the role of vice principal. She is a strong leader and we have the utmost confidence that she will lead Marian with distinction. Please join us in congratulating Sister Sarah.

Marian Middle School President - Mary Elizabeth GrimesDecember, 2013 - The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Mary Elizabeth Grimes as the new President of Marian Middle School. "It is truly an honor to share in the mission of Educating Girls for Life. Being from a family of educators, I look forward to incorporating my enthusiasm, experience and faith to lead such a great organization," says Ms. Grimes.

Ms. Grimes has worked with a variety of organizations in the St. Louis area, most recently as the State Director of the Greater Missouri Chapter—March of Dimes. Maureen Herrmann

August, 2013 - At the end of August, Marian Middle School said goodbye to Maureen Herrmann. After serving as president for ten years, Maureen accepted a position as Director of Institutional Advancement at Chaminade College Preparatory School. While we are sad to see Maureen leave, we feel fortunate to have had her with us for a decade.
During her time at Marian, Maureen made significant contributions and saw tremendous growth. In 2003, Marian consisted of six staff members and its 30 students took classes on the third floor of the former St. Anthony of Padua High School. Today, Marian is blessed with two buildings in South St. Louis City, 20 staff members, and more than 70 girls in grades fifth through eighth. Through Maureen's guidance and energy, the school has built an ever widening circle of supporters and a stable and sustainable program serving girls from a wide area. Marian has touched the lives of over 150 alumnae, seen the first Marian girls graduate from college, and received numerous awards and recognition. We have been privileged to have Maureen play such a vital role in our journey to provide a transformational education for under-served women in our community.

Barbara Roche, SLWhile we look for a new president, Marian is very happy to announce that we have named Sr. Barbara Roche, SL as interim president. Sr. Barbara is one of the school's foundresses and has been on the board for many years. Sr. Barbara's background with Marian and her experience as past president of Nerinx Hall High School will create a good bridge to the school's continued success. We have an exciting year planned and look forward to many more great accomplishments!
